URANUS: THE "TIPPED-OVER" PLANET

With its axis nearly perpendicular to the plane of its orbit, Uranus is often called the "tipped-over" planet! In its slow and distant 84-year orbit, it therefore points one of its poles toward us here on Earth every 42 years!

It must be noted that Uranus's rings are actually quite dim—so dim in fact that they were not discovered until the late 1970's! In the animation above they have been enhanced for emphasis.
